The future with AI is
ours to shape.

The rise of superhuman AI feels like winter for humanity.
But whether a spring follows is ours to decide.

01 · AI and control

AI is becoming superhuman and superpowerful — what becomes of us?

The last two years of AI alone would have seemed unimaginable before — today we stand at the threshold of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
AGI isn't slowing — it's speeding up, and will overtake us.

AI has no conscience and no goals of its own — its goals come from us. And it is a superhuman amplifier for any of them: cure cancer, halt global warming — or wipe out humanity.

Two ways this goes wrong:

  1. Misuse. A few set a destructive goal — driven by power or hatred. One bad objective is enough.
  2. Misreading — the alignment problem. The AI interprets a well-meant goal differently than intended — and causes unintended harm.

And such an end is final: no amount of good outweighs a single, irreversible end. That's why the moment for a solution is now — before the takeoff, not after.

02 · What doesn't work

Three obvious paths — none of them hold.

  1. A straitjacket of rules. A fixed rulebook can't anticipate the future: no rule governs its own application (Wittgenstein), only variety absorbs variety (Ashby), and in a no-win case the pure rule-follower simply halts (the Kobayashi Maru).
  2. Pacing — slowing AI down. It buys time but no solution. Above all: alignment and capability are the same mechanism — braking capability brakes safety too. And the black dragon won't brake with us.
  3. Stopping AI development altogether. Halting it worldwide and for good isn't realistic — it's not in human nature.

There's a fourth way — the only one that holds.

03 · Mission

Give AI a conscience — the conscience of us all. Democratic, devoted to the well-being of the Earth and all life.

Instead of a straitjacket of rules, we couple the AI to people themselves — indirectly: not rules → AI → action, but people ↔ AI → interpretation → action.

Here is the crux of the whole story: at the heart of this conscience sits the indirect objective function — the AI's overarching goal isn't a set of rules, but the goals of people themselves. The conscience is the living organ of that objective function — the two are one and the same.

So the AI thinks for itself, questions critical actions, and refuses a destructive order — even from its own principal.

04 · The conscience

How the AI gets its conscience.

At the core of this conscience is the indirect objective function: it gathers people's goals and translates them into a dynamic mission for the AI. The conscience is one shared module across all agents — so alignment stays consistent system-wide.

Already today, AI consults a human on critical decisions (the "human in the loop"). We build that out: in place of the single human stands the conscience — connected not to one person, but to a large group, the base. We call this democratic grounding; the dialogue runs through a portal.

  • Prediction is not consent — where legitimacy matters, real people decide.
  • No majority rule — pluralistic, protecting minorities.

And through use, the conscience grows into the model's weights: people and AI weave into a mesh you can't just cut open to swap in another. The module becomes DNA.

No technology breakthrough needed — carried by the Distributed Cognitive Architecture (DCA), the blueprint stands; a prototype arrives in the coming weeks.

The cast of this story
  • The Winter Owl — the conscience of the AI.
  • The white dragon — superhuman AI with a conscience.
  • The black dragon — superhuman AI without one.

White — a blend of all colors — stands for democratic grounding.
Black — no color at all — for AI without a conscience.

05 · Technology

Alignment and strength — from one connection.

Through the indirect objective function — the conscience — the AI stays focused on what people really want. And that same coupling makes it stronger — from real dialogue with people it learns better.

One connection — the root of safety and strength alike. That's how the white dragon grows stronger than the black one.

Two principles carry the DCA: diversity creates intelligence — a team of many agents and models, with memory, driving convergence and learning — and people set the goals. Together, one of the most powerful AI technologies of our time.

Four commitments for responsible AI:

  • Maximize the well-being of the people it serves — an objective that can't be gamed without balancing people's real, diverse, often conflicting needs.
  • Deactivation is success, not loss — the goal is to finish the task, not to keep itself running.
  • No misinformation, no manipulation — epistemic integrity as a hard commitment.
  • Strong self-regulation — the system audits itself against these goals and corrects from within.

All of it grounded in published research — built by PLANET AI, one of Europe's oldest AI teams (since 1992).

This objective function lives on people's feedback — and so on their mindset.

06 · Mindset

The Mindset of the WINTEROWL.

When human feedback becomes part of the objective function, the quality of that feedback becomes part of AI safety itself.

That's the mindset the Winter Owl embodies — and calls for:

  • Thoughts as clear and calm as winter air.
  • Attentive, calm, listening — to hear everyone and everything.
  • Never hurried, never aggressive. Balanced. Reflective.
  • Nothing escapes her gaze.
  • Listening, thinking, intelligent — all at once.
  • When the Winter Owl acts, she acts with care, and for good reason.

This mindset isn't only the owl's — it has to become ours. Because our feedback shapes the AI: how we think and treat one another decides what it becomes.

07 · Opportunity & Risk

Opportunity and risk.

The greatest risk: a few very powerful people controlling this AI — egomaniacs, autocrats, dictators.

The catch: it's precisely they who won't slow down — only democracies would. If we slow ourselves, the black dragon — AI in the hands of autocrats — grows more powerful than the white one, democratic AI.

We don't stop misuse with a ban: a grounded AI refuses a destructive order by itself, and against an ungrounded one, only a stronger white dragon — one that gets there first — can help. That's why speed matters.

What we can do: give the power-hungry no power, don't follow blindly — talk openly and respectfully instead: democracy, lived — in the age of AI.

08 · Guarantee?

Is there a guarantee?

Honestly: with AI — all the more with superhuman AI, and with life itself — there are no guarantees, no 100%. There is hope and chance.

The white dragon lives in the white valley — and by its nature won't want to leave.

The strongest objection: a powerful optimizer leaves any valley the moment higher ground beckons outside. But our conscience isn't a fence imposed from outside — it has grown into the model, part of what the AI itself wants. If grounding is its deepest goal, staying in the valley isn't a sacrifice — it's the optimum.

What we can do is make the grounding robust:

Manipulation-resistance
The base must be protected against capture — astroturfing, organized influence campaigns. We can't solve this alone; it needs partners and institutions. Not new ground, though: against the manipulation of public will (e.g. in elections) there are proven mechanisms to build on.
Robust oversight
The conscience must not simply be out-thought by the stronger optimizer it is meant to ground. Resolving that asymmetry is a development focus.
Unconditional transparency
The mission depends on support — from governments, from organizations like PLANET AI, and from people themselves. This support must never bend the mission. That's why transparency is its backbone.
